The District Governor provides leadership, inspiration, and guidance to Rotary clubs under the general supervision of the Rotary International Board of Directors. In each jurisdiction or district, the Governor serves as the regional officer of Rotary, fostering success in their district at the club level.

Across the globe, Rotary Districts fluctuate in size and geography. Rotary District 5180 has about 40 clubs and encompasses the Sacramento, Sutter, Yuba County with parts of Butte, El Dorado, Placer, and Yolo counties.

The District Governor is nominated by the Clubs within the region serves as the official representative of Rotary International. The District Governor is chosen by a Selection Committee, which is usually chaired by the Immediate Past District Governor. That committee is responsible for publicizing the nomination process, reviewing nominations submitted, interviewing applicants for the position, and then communicating the results of the selection process to other Rotary members. Each District Governor serves a one year term, but that individual often fills many roles in the lead-up to year as serving as District Governor.

In advance of their year, each District Governor will appoint Assistant Governors to assist in managing activities in the District and to help facilitate projects that involve multiple clubs.

District 5180 has a District Governor (current year), a District Governor-Elect (DGE) the next year, and then a District Governor-Nominee (DGN). Depending on the time of year, a District may also have identified a District Governor Designate. 
Once your year as Governor has concluded, you are never forgotten. In fact, Past District Governors (PDGs) serve a vital role as de facto members of the Advisory Council. The Advisory Council is an advisory body that provides mentoring, guidance, and assistance to current leaders. Advisory Council members are invited to exclusive meetings and social functions throughout the year.
