The Sacramento Rotary Club, assisted by other clubs in the district, heads a "Rotarian at Work" day for the benefit of Senior Gleaners over Thanksgiving Weekend.

The Rotary Club of Sacramento had “Rotarian At Work” Day at Senior Gleaners scheduled for Dec 6th. 90 soldiers, about to deploy, wanted to serve the community but could only work on the 6th, so we quickly changed to November 29 - Thanksgiving weekend. Because of this last minute date change, I was worried…but I shouldn’t have been. For all the Rotarians who were out of town for the holiday, there were more of us here with family and friends to bring along. We were 75 strong and half a dozen AmeriCorp workers joined us. We had Rotarians from our club, Citrus Heights, and West Sacramento. Our own Heidi Hershenhouse recruited about 30 of her family and friends with only a week’s notice! We sorted and boxed 51,000 thousand of pounds of food so it could be distributed to local Food Banks on Monday. I am so grateful for Rotary and each and every Rotarian.  We did, indeed, Light Up Rotary!

On previous work days, Rotarians from the Natomas, Lincoln, and East Sacramento clubs have joined us, as well as Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Drexel University students, and other students fulfilling community service hours. We invite all clubs to join us next year on our work days: March 21st, June 20, Sept 19, and again on Thanksgiving weekend Nov 28.

Senior Gleaners distributes to local Food Banks, in Placer, San Joaquin, Yolo, Yuba, Nevada, El Dorado, Shasta, Tehama, Butte, Sutter, Amador, and of course Sacramento counties. Last year they distributed 8M pounds of food to about 108,000 people. This year they anticipate 12M pounds of food to about 160,000 people.
